Gods of blood range from good to evil, and so do the clerics of this new homebrew subclass, the Blood Domain, previewed from the upcoming compendium of forbidden lore and heretical magic known as The Impermissicon. This blood cleric subclass is one of many blood magic-themed subclasses to appear in the compendium. Other blood magic subclasses include the sorcerer (which has received updates since its last previewing), wizard, and even paladin.

Designing multiple blood-magic-themed subclasses required us to be very specific and distinct with each subclass’s themes and mechanics to ensure that each subclass feels connected to its parent class and doesn’t feel particularly like any other class. In this case, that means ensuring that the blood cleric does not feel like a blood sorcerer or a blood wizard, and that neither of those subclasses feel like a blood cleric either. The early renditions of these subclasses weren’t living up to those expectations, so it’s taken us some time to properly refine them to this point. In the case of this cleric subclass, we focused on the concept of responding to blood loss rather than causing it. While the blood wizard focuses on interfering with the blood of others and the blood sorcerer focuses on utilizing its own blood for power, the blood cleric is more support-oriented, focusing on aiding its allies in response to blood being spilt — regardless of whose blood it is. Like the sorcerer, the blood cleric gains the ability to cast spells using hit dice at 1st level, whereas the wizard gains this ability at 6th level.
