Wrangler (Ranger) & Trapper (Rogue)

Wrangler (Ranger) & Trapper (Rogue)

Sometimes you don’t want to hurt someone — you just want to catch them. Of course if you’re not careful on your hunt, you may just fall into their trap.

Today we have two closely related subclasses from Legends of Prestige and Prowess. Both of these subclasses feature new special weapons, and both are distinctly nonmagical.

The Wrangler Ranger specializes with crippling weapon attacks, as well as with nets and the new bola weapon. This ranger archetype might not deal as much damage as some other archetypes, but it can really lock foes down just like a proper hunter or wrangler should. The 11th level feature lets you choose between wrapping foes together like Batman or knocking them into each other to slow them all down in the tangle. The 15th level feature functions either through rule-of-cool or because the ranger has found/invented specialized nets and bolas that can affect formless and huge creatures. That 7th level feature giving advantage against traps will help if you run into the second subclass of the day…

…the Trapper Rogue. These schemers specialize in not just their own quickly-assembled traps but also in fancy caltrops, and they always shine in encounters where they have a moment (or a minute) to prepare beforehand. The traps are designed to be intentionally vague about how exactly they're constructed or triggered -- in order to maintain some mechanical simplicity, we've chosen to leave the details of whether a trap is triggered by a tripped wire, a pressure plate, a magical sensor, or some other artifice so that it can be decided by the player when it triggers, rather than when it is set up. Anyone with the proper proficiencies can set up traps over a short rest as detailed in the tool use section of Xanathar's Guide, but the Trapper rogue gets to set up more punchy traps in just 1 minute a number of times per day based on their Intelligence.
