“That strange knight moves like an automaton. He seems immune to pain. I’d think him almost dead if he hadn’t counterattacked with such fervor!”

Whether you want to play an undead warrior like the knights from Dark Souls, a fighter like Koschei the Deathless whose magic prevents dying, or just the most determined kind of tough, relentless scrapper that won’t go down no matter what, today’s fighter subclass from the tome of forbidden magic, The Impermissicon, is what you need. This versatile archetype can be combined with the undead lineages released in Unearthed Arcana, or used by itself to create an undead-style warrior of any species.

The Deathless archetype is designed to be relatively simple when compared to other fighter subclasses. Like the samurai from Xanathar’s, it is more complicated than the champion but has considerably fewer options than the battle master or the eldritch knight. But while the samurai subclass gives a fighter PC a focus on grace and skill, the deathless focuses on toughness and sudden vigor, with its edge bent toward undead themes. The main choice presented by the deathless is when to use your Second Wind — whether to prioritize the healing and temporary hit points, or the offensive bonus of the extra attack.
